with recognition in 181 countries

About us

MARIS Digital Depository (“MARIS DD”) is a fully automated global electronic repository providing copyright deposit and rights protection services for authors and rightholders from jurisdictions worldwide.

Established in 2025 as an operational, non-governmental system for the legal protection of intellectual works across international borders, MARIS DD today offers comprehensive copyright registration and protection services to applicants from all countries, with a particular focus on CIS member states.

Principal Activities

The principal activity of MARIS DD is the full implementation of the requirements of the Civil Code of the Russian Federation and other applicable copyright legislation, together with the provisions of the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (administered by the World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO) — including verification of submitted intellectual property works and KYC (Know Your Customer) identity and corporate data validation of applicants.

Legally Significant Protection of Works

A fundamental issue in copyright law is that a mere declaration of authorship — standing alone — does not constitute legally sufficient evidence of rights. In practice, such declarations are often made at negligible cost: for example, by an author sending a sealed envelope containing a copy of the work to their own address via postal service. This approach is colloquially known as the “poor man’s copyright.”

It must be emphasised that neither international nor national copyright law recognises this mechanism as a legally valid or enforceable form of protection. Such practice does not substitute for the established procedure of formal registration and does not provide an adequate level of legal protection for the copyrighted work.

The critical challenge in the protection of rightholders’ interests typically arises at the enforcement stage — in particular, in the course of copyright infringement disputes and in dealings with governmental authorities or financial institutions (such as royalty payment administration). In these contexts, the existence of a sufficient and properly documented evidentiary basis — confirming the fact of creation and establishing ownership of the intellectual work — is of paramount importance.

In the absence of a deposited copyright registration supported by duly issued copyright certificates, rightholders face significant difficulty in demonstrating that their works are original, recorded in evidentiary form, and precede any third-party competing claims.

MARIS DD provides a modern digital depository system enabling creators to register intellectual property objects with full verification, validation, and international recognition. Following digital deposit, MARIS DD is able — upon the client’s request — to provide a printed copy of the IP Certificate as evidence that the work is registered in the rightholder’s name.

Rights of Registered Rightholders

Please note: All rightholders who have deposited their copyright works and hold duly registered copyright certificates are entitled to the following rights:

  1. Recognition of authorship worldwide — in all states party to the Berne Convention (181 member states).
  2. Protection against unfair competition worldwide — in all Berne Convention member states.
  3. Protection against unauthorised commercial exploitation of their technology, processes, and methodology.
  4. Capitalisation and monetisation opportunities — through licensing agreements, franchise arrangements, and other intellectual property instruments.

International Requirements

Pursuant to the Berne Convention, the following key requirements are mandatory for copyright registration authorities (a full list of requirements is available from authorised regional operators):

Requirement No. 1 — Public Access MARIS DD provides a publicly accessible online link to the deposited work, enabling access to the relevant copyright information via the internet through a dedicated server repository — thereby satisfying any reasonable public interest in reviewing the registered copyright object.

Requirement No. 2 — International Publication MARIS DD ensures the international publication of the deposited copyrighted work via the internet. In accordance with the requirements of the Berne Convention, a work is deemed to have been published simultaneously in multiple countries for the purposes of international recognition if it has been published in two or more countries within thirty days of its first publication.

Requirement No. 3 — Author-Approved Publication MARIS DD enters into public agreements (through authorised regional operators) with authors and accepts applications in which authors expressly confirm their authorisation for the transfer of the work to the depository for the purposes of registration.

MARIS DD copyright certificates are recognised in 181 countries worldwide (Berne Convention member states). The following categories of works — among others — may be deposited: original brands, mobile applications, works of science, literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, audiovisual and sound recordings, including novels, poetry, song lyrics, compositions, paintings, drawings, designs, computer-generated images, software, advertisements, logos, educational materials, and game rules.

Expert Credentials

The principal expert of MARIS DD is Dr. Sandjar Muminov — an internationally recognised specialist in intellectual property law, based in the UAE. In 2024, Dr. Muminov was awarded the prestigious title of Patent Attorney of the Year by the International Intellectual Property Law Association (IIPLA, USA).

Additional Client Support

In the event of a dispute, MARIS DD is able to provide rightholders with expert advisory support from specialists with extensive experience in the successful protection of rightholders’ interests.
